What Does a Fayette County, WV Wedding Venue Owner Know About Smiles?

Your wedding day is a remarkable occasion, filled with love and joy. It's more than just a celebration; it's a moment to shine and express how you feel. A beautiful and healthy smile can enhance photographs and create lasting memories. So, how can you ensure your smile is picture-perfect for the big day? A local registered dental hygienist shares essential tips to make sure your smile matches the beauty of your celebration.
And that local registered dental hygienist is me, Brooke, the owner and operator of Evermore Ridge Venue located in Fayette County, WV!
Managing our Fayette County, WV wedding venue isn't my only skill. In addition to being a venue owner, I am also a registered dental hygienist. It is a common occurrence to be about halfway through a venue tour when someone says, "You look familiar, did you clean my teeth?" Most of the time, the answer is, "yes!" With nearly a decade of experience as a dental hygienist, I can confidently say I know a thing or two about teeth (and gums!).
Start Early: A Journey to Dental Health
Preparing for your wedding day is a process that doesn’t happen overnight. To ensure your dental health shines, begin your journey towards a healthy and beautiful smile at least 6 months before the wedding. If you are not regularly seeing a dentist, now is the time to schedule an appointment. The American Dental Association recommends visiting your dentist every six months, so step one is to make the appointment!

Professional cleanings eliminate surface stains, calculus (build-up), and biofilm (plaque), contributing to the overall health of your mouth and potentially benefiting your overall health, as your mouth is indeed connected to your whole body!
If you're in Nicholas County, Fayette County, Raleigh County, or nearby, I highly recommend Dr. Klenk, Lockhart, and Hughes. Visit their website for information on how to reach their team to schedule an appointment.
At your appointment, you can discuss possible cosmetic treatments with your dental hygienist, such as whitening options or alignment corrections (usually requires a referral to an orthodontist). For example, if you’re considering teeth whitening, starting a few months ahead allows you the time to reach your whitening goals. It also gives you time to have any restorative needs completed (fillings, crowns, etc.). Remember, a healthy mouth leads to a confident smile.

Maintain a Daily Oral Care Routine
As the wedding day approaches, stick to a consistent oral care routine. Brush your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste, and floss at least daily. Brushing and flossing can help prevent gum disease and cavities, making a significant difference in your smile. In my professional opinion, it is also worthwhile investing in an electric toothbrush. Research shows that electric toothbrushes are more effective at removing biofilm (plaque). I particularly like the Oral B iO electric toothbrush and have personally observed improvements in patients' oral health when they begin using this toothbrush consistently.
Choose the Right Product for Your Needs

Navigating the wide range of dental hygiene products can be overwhelming. Always choose products with the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. If the product bears the seal, you can be assured that it has been tested and verified to function safely and effectively as advertised.
Typically, one of the most frequent questions dental hygienists receive from brides and grooms-to-be concerns whitening. It's important to remember that whitening can lead to sensitivity and isn't always suitable for everyone. Personally, I experience some daily sensitivity but have still achieved excellent results with Opalescence products without a significant increase in my overall sensitivity. Opalescence Go is an excellent and affordable product that can be used at home, yet it remains a professional whitening product that delivers impressive results for patients.
Be Mindful of Your Diet
What you eat directly impacts your oral health. Aim for a balanced diet filled with fruits and vegetables. Crunchy options like apples and carrots not only offer nutrition but also help clean your teeth. Reduce the consumption of sugary snacks and drinks, such as soda, sweet tea, and candy, as they can cause tooth decay. Consider reducing your intake of coffee, tea, or red wine, as they can stain teeth.
Practice Your Smile
A radiant smile can illuminate your face, though it doesn't come naturally to everyone. Try standing in front of a mirror and experimenting with various smiles—whether big, subtle, excited.

Getting comfortable with your smile will allow you to express genuine emotions on your wedding day. A current trend among brides is practicing their "soft smiles" for the occasion. While soft smiles can be lovely, it's important to stay true to yourself and enjoy the moment!
Remember to Have Fun & Celebrate Your Smile Journey
It's easy to get caught up in the planning process but remember to enjoy yourself. Your wedding day is about celebrating love and commitment, and that joy should shine through.
Your wedding day shows the beauty of love and joy, and having a perfect smile adds to the occasion. By starting your preparations early, sticking to a solid oral care routine, and practicing your smile, you'll make sure you’re ready to shine.
